A Little Bit of History
Christopher Newport was born in 1561. He grew up in London, England where many sailors came from. By the time Christopher Newport was a teenager he was already working on sailing ships. When he left London, Newport was a privateer, which was someone who had permission from the government to attack an enemy ship and then take whatever treasure was on board. However, during one battle with Spanish ships, Newport got injured. Christopher Newport lost his right forearm and in the place of his hand he put a metal hook. Eventually Spain and England made peace with each other and began many years of trading with each other.
